Talking with some friends who have achieved many meaningful things in their lives, or at least, that is what most people around them think, I had some interesting epiphanies.
Viewed from my perspective, most of them have achieved wonderful things, one of them has written more than 30 books, some of them best-sellers in different countries, another one has a company that helps poor people in different countries, the other one has made many movies that were really famous worldwide, and he is still very respected in the film industry.
Yet, they do not see themselves as overachievers, despite the fact that most of us around them see them as role models to emulate.
When talking to them in a reunion, I was amazed to see that they actually see themselves as “regular” people, they always have someone “above” them that they admire and wish to imitate at all costs.
For instance, I asked my friend who is a very successful writer how did he start writing books? Was it difficult? Was it something he always wanted to do? Continue reading →
Probably you have not realised how many people are observing you now.
What you are doing or not doing, what you say, what you do not say, what you are supposed to accomplish and what they are still waiting for you to achieve.
They have formed their concept about you, with what they see from the outside.
But how do things look from the inside?
Probably you feel there are too many incomplete things in your life right now. You know all those things you have been wanting to start, but for “some external reasons” you have not found the “right moment” to begin. Right? Continue reading →
I still have problems defining when I have to stop trying to do things. On one side my mind tells me to “make things happen” and the other side says “do not force things and go with the flow”. And that is like trying to drive with one foot on the accelerator and the other on the brake at the same time.
I know, sometimes life asks you to go beyond your normal efforts in order to achieve more meaningful things and sometimes you need to allow things to freely flow because with your pressure you are only slowing things down.
I was very impressed when I listened a professor once who was explaining how our mind was not capable to understand the infinite. “Our mind is finite, therefore it cannot understand the concept of infinite”. He explained.
When they say there is a probability that “the universe was never created and it will never end” our mind immediately enters in conflict, because “eternity” is not an easy concept to grasp. Continue reading →
We always talk about being present, we are constantly remembered that we need to focus our attention on the “here and now” if we want to lead a happy life.
But have you noticed how difficult “being here” really is?
This modern life has too many distractors around us and our mind is getting used to pretend it can “multitask”, that means doing multiple task at one time. But that is not possible for humans. Yes, I know most women think they can do it because they usually have to keep their mind on different things at the same time, but human multitasking is very different to computer multitasking. I have been reading everywhere about the importance to choose the people you surround yourself with. And I am not talking only about your work team, but the people you spend more time with in your everyday life.
They say we become what we eat, but we become too a little like those who surround us, human beings are imitation creatures, so we end up implementing customs, habits, ideas, concepts, movements, and many other things almost without noticing it.
Have you noticed when friends of yours share expressions, taste, manners, slang and some other characteristics that they didn’t showed before, and after sometime of “hanging out” with mutual friends or acquaintances, they begin to behave in similar ways. Continue reading →
Most people of a certain age I know like to see their life backwards. That is, they like to see all the things they have accomplished during their lives. How things were tough once and they were able to overcome the obstacles and fight to get what they wanted. But 95% of them when I ask them if they would go through all of that from square one, they answer: NO!
So most of them have lived a life full of difficulties and have learnt to overcome them and they are now in a privileged place because they passed their tests. Nevertheless they don’t like the idea of starting all over again.
They feel they have reached the goal and now they can just rest and live looking at the past for the rest of their lives. Continue reading →
When I received my first tricycle when I was around 3 or 4 years old, I thought that was the happiest day of my life. It was green with a white handle. I was the happiest boy on planet Earth.
Then the years passed and when I received my first video game console, I was so happy I couldn’t believe it was really happening, it was amazing and you could actually plug in a keyboard and write basic programs in it. I was the happiest teenager on planet Earth.
Then more years passed loaded with different happy moments when I considered myself the happiest person on planet Earth. And the truth is, right now I am finding even more moments when I am so happy and grateful every day, that I think I am the happiest person on planet Earth. Continue reading →
They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, nevertheless many authors (published or indie) struggle to design the best cover for their books. They know a cover will attract customers and “encourage” them to buy their books.
We do the same with humans. We know we shouldn’t judge them by their physical appearance yet, hard habits die hard and we still judge people by their “cover”.
A few days ago I cut my chin while shaving. The cut left an ugly scar that was easily seen by a distance. Of course that made me very self-conscious of my appearance and I think everybody notice my insecurity, despite my efforts to look confident. I don’t know maybe it was just my appreciation. I was new at that programming job, I was young and it was my first work in a very impressive environment. Everyone was much older than I and with all the experience of the world, being the elite of engineers and experts in many fields. It was overwhelming for me.
One day they asked me to do a program to do some satellite tracking routines and I had no idea how to do something like that. Continue reading →
