Your advantage

Talking with some friends who have achieved many meaningful things in their lives, or at least, that is what most people around them think, I had some interesting epiphanies.

Viewed from my perspective, most of them have achieved wonderful things, one of them has written more than 30 books, some of them best-sellers in different countries, another one has a company that helps poor people in different countries, the other one has made many movies that were really famous worldwide, and he is still very respected in the film industry.

Yet, they do not see themselves as overachievers,  despite the fact that most of us around them see them as role models to emulate.

When talking to them in a reunion, I was amazed to see that they actually see themselves as “regular” people, they always have someone “above” them that they admire and wish to imitate at all costs.

For instance, I asked my friend who is a very successful writer how did he start writing books? Was it difficult? Was it something he always wanted to do? Continue reading

Do nothing

We are living very hectic times, everything must be quick and short. We like to see a movie instead of reading the book, we strive to find shortcuts, instead of taking the time to learn and practice to do things properly. We prefer to pay to get our clothes washed and ironed instead of taking the time to do it ourselves.

Square one

Most people of a certain age I know like to see their life backwards. That is, they like to see all the things they have accomplished during their lives. How things were tough once and they were able to overcome the obstacles and fight to get what they wanted.  But 95% of them when I ask them if they would go through all of that from square one, they answer: NO!

So most of them have lived a life full of difficulties and have learnt to overcome them and they are now in a privileged place because they passed their tests. Nevertheless they don’t like the idea of starting all over again.

They feel they have reached the goal and now they can just rest and live looking at the past for the rest of their lives. Continue reading

Beginning

When we open a book or a movie begins, we take the first lines or scene as the “beginning” of that story.

Even if in the book or movie there might be some references to other stories or events way before the beginning or the actual story, (actually where we were introduced to it) we always take that first scene or line as “the beginning”. Continue reading

Use your fear wisely

Have you ever asked yourself how to know if you are doing something right? Well, I think this might interest you.

Fear serves as a danger indicator and there are different levels of fear.  When we are facing an imminent fear we can feel a VERY strong emotion inside of us that keep us from taking any action whatsoever.  This fear paralyse us completely and many times save us from a lethal end. Continue reading
