Talking with some friends who have achieved many meaningful things in their lives, or at least, that is what most people around them think, I had some interesting epiphanies.
Viewed from my perspective, most of them have achieved wonderful things, one of them has written more than 30 books, some of them best-sellers in different countries, another one has a company that helps poor people in different countries, the other one has made many movies that were really famous worldwide, and he is still very respected in the film industry.
Yet, they do not see themselves as overachievers, despite the fact that most of us around them see them as role models to emulate.
When talking to them in a reunion, I was amazed to see that they actually see themselves as “regular” people, they always have someone “above” them that they admire and wish to imitate at all costs.
For instance, I asked my friend who is a very successful writer how did he start writing books? Was it difficult? Was it something he always wanted to do? Continue reading →
Advice on how to be a good business partner, a better spouse, friend, lover, student, boss and so on. Are everywhere.
You can see in most magazines and newspapers, a section dedicated to those subjects. Everybody has something to tell you on how to be a better “version of yourself”.
All this information, as everything else in life, might be very useful and, of course, we can learn a lot when we try to apply it to our daily life but, on the other hand, we need to be extremely vigilant of what we accept and what we take with a pinch of salt.
We are all individuals, we are all different (fortunately). We can try to do things differently in order to learn new ways to do things, even faster and better.
But when it comes to your own nature, your own personality, your own being. Things are very different. Continue reading →
One of the most difficult things I have tried to get over with is that feeling of not doing enough to make this a better world for me and others.
Sometimes I feel so useless and powerless while trying to find a better way to do things. I wish there was an “app” in my mind to help me find the best and fastest way to accomplish those long awaited and unfulfilled dreams in my heart.
But I guess sometimes Life has a way to “help” you learn things faster and that is by giving you experiences where you can apply those things you have been reading and learning about through many different sources. But when times comes for you to “utilise” the tools you have received throughout your life, is when real “knowledge” comes.
It is really amusing to listen to those people who believe their “truth” is the only reality that exists. And you can find examples everywhere and at all levels. From regular people to professors at prestigious universities throughout the world.
We all cling to our own particular “truth” and what others think Is just unfounded rubbish. Yes, I am sure you know many examples of this as well. Continue reading →
Nowadays, empty words are such a trend. Everybody has to say something all the time.
Even when they do not know what to say or they have no idea of what they are talking about.
If someone else is talking about something that happened to them the day before, people usually have an anecdote “more interesting”, “more frightening”, “more fabulous” to add.
If someone has some kind of illness or is going through a difficult time, there will always be that person who is going through something much more terrible than the others. As if demeaning other´s people problems and dilemmas was some kind of contest. Continue reading →
I couldn’t say that he was in his best mood but, at least he was doing his best not to look too worried. He had all his life been a fine person, a little “different” from the rest but, a decent man.
He had to sell part of his company and part of his possessions to be able to pay some of his debts. And as usually happens, more tragedies appeared in his life at that time. Deaths, illness, divorce, problems, radical changes and many other unexpected events arrived all at once.
His life was totally different to what he had been used to his whole life. Continue reading →
I was watching a video of my daughter dancing, in my opinion, (and I must say that I am not the typical father who sees everything his children do as marvellous and perfect), she did a very good job, but for her, she danced terribly, I tried to see the terrible parts in it, to comment with her what should be improved, but it was not as bad as she saw herself.
That reminded me when I was her age I used to see the videos of my tournaments and I was extremely critic of myself. My teachers were happy with my improvements, but to my eyes I was really lousy and clumsy in my movements. Maybe it was the little critic we all have inside? Continue reading →
They were asking me for my opinion on some artwork pieces they were choosing from, for an incoming exhibition. As I am not an expert or critic of art, I remained silent most of the time, watching how every time someone spoke out their opinion on a painting or sculpture someone else revoke the concept giving their own and very different opinion about it.
It seemed like a strange contest where everybody was trying to “debunk” the other, it turned out very funny and at the end of the session we all laughed about it, since it made so evident the variety of our tastes and ideas about what art is and what that exposition should contain.
