What you are not

I have met many people who are convinced they are what they are not. And when you hold an idea in your mind long enough, it becomes part of your reality.

The problem is, that when you are holding in your mind the wrong concept, then the outside world will cause you more harm than good.

For instance, I know a friend whose parents told him all the time he was not good at math.  They repeated him all the time he was a failure in math and other sciences. Fortunately for him and for many of us, he ended up listening to his inner voice that always told him he really liked math and he ended up being a wonderful math teacher who loves spreading his knowledge to his students and has been teaching several generations the magic of math. You define yourself

I remember one day when my daughter told me she was stupid.

I was very impressed by the way she said that. She was around 5 years old and after school she told me she was stupid in a very confident and serene voice. She was totally convinced that was a fact.

I asked her why she said that and, in the same tone, she answered: “My teacher told me I am stupid, my friends told me I am stupid, my cousins told me I am stupid therefore, I must be stupid”

“Did they tell you that today?” I asked.

“Yes, but they have told me that before, so I think they must be right” She answered with sadness. Continue reading

 Forever

I was very impressed when I listened a professor once who was explaining how our mind was not capable to understand the infinite. “Our mind is finite, therefore it cannot understand the concept of infinite”. He explained.

When they say there is a probability that “the universe was never created and it will never end” our mind immediately enters in conflict, because “eternity” is not an easy concept to grasp. Continue reading

The art of healing

“The wish for healing has always been half of health.” – Seneca

Nowadays the word “healing” has been taking different meanings, it can refer to physical healing, moral, mental or spiritual alleviation.

The pharmaceutical industry has been presenting an image of physical healing as something you will obtain only by the consumption of chemical medicaments. Religions have given us the image that spiritual and moral healing (“salvation”) is obtained by attending to a place to worship divinity and follow certain rules implemented by humans etc.

It seems we all have our own concept of healing, but have you noticed that there are people who apparently are searching for healing but that are avoiding it at the same time? Continue reading

My Image

I was listening in silence as she was speaking about herself.

She was saying how wonderful she was, how patient, good friend, understanding and helpful she was to everybody. How people love her and they all like her so much. Don´t get me wrong, she is a good person but for some reason she has a different concept of what others think about her. Continue reading

Success in others

It is so easy to enjoy our own success, obviously it feels great and it is part of our life. When we achieve something we feel great and that feeling helps us to set even higher goals. It fills us with enthusiasm and self-confidence and those are great fuels.

It is easy to feel inspired and motivated with the success of our close family and even friends.  When we see a close one who has been struggling and probably we have witnessed this effort from a close range, we can feel this success as our own. That will motivate us and help us to try to achieve more ourselves. Continue reading

Gorgeous

When was the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror and liked what you saw?

I was joking yesterday with my daughter about a Japanese legend called “口裂け女kuchisake onna” (slit-mouthed woman) it’s about a woman wearing a surgical mask who appears to children and ask them: “Am I pretty?” If the child answered “no” she killed him with a pair of scissors she always carries with her, and if  the child  answered “yes” then she removed the mask and they could see that her mouth was slit from ear to ear and then she asked: “What about now?” If the child answers no, he/she will be cut in half. If the child answers yes, then she will slit his/her mouth like hers. Continue reading
