Here

We always talk about being present, we are constantly remembered that we need to focus our attention on the “here and now” if we want to lead a happy life.

But have you noticed how difficult “being here” really is?

This modern life has too many distractors around us and our mind is getting used to pretend it can “multitask”, that means doing multiple task at one time. But that is not possible for humans.  Yes, I know most women think they can do it because they usually have to keep their mind on different things at the same time, but human multitasking is very different to computer multitasking. Solitude

“So you are marrying that guy?” I asked her.

“Yes I am.” She answered with a vague look in her eyes.

“But you said you met him just two months ago” I asked her with surprise.

After a few seconds of consideration she swiftly said: “Yes, but please understand that I don´t want to be alone anymore.” Her voice was firm and I understood she didn´t want to continue this conversation Continue reading

Relearning

I always thought I had mastered my favourite subject (mathematics) since I had graduated and received a title as an engineer. When I was at school, I always entertained the idea that once you finish your career you know everything you need to work on your profession and then you can proceed to the next step. Whatever a next step is.

I thought I had “made it” and I shouldn’t worry about “looking back” to review what I supposedly knew so well. But I was surprised when I tried to enrol in an advanced quantum mechanics class, they asked me to take an online test to see my “level”, since this class was only for “advanced students”. And they expected us to have a certain level in order to deal with the concepts without having to “explain the basics” to the no initiated.  Continue reading

The same?

I was waiting for the tube at a crowded station and I couldn’t help to overhear the conversation of two middle aged ladies happily chatting by my side.

One of them had gone to Spain for the summer and was amazed by some particularities of the language, she said something like this: “In Spain they give a gender to objects, for instance, they call a chair a ´she´, (she meant it is classified as feminine) and a shoe a ´he´ (masculine), that sounded so ´foreign´ She said with an amazed expression on her face.” Continue reading

Numbness

As I sat in a bench in the park to rest a little after a long walk. There was a nice gentlemen sitting there already so I said a typical: “good morning” and let my body heavily fall on the bench.

That gentleman cheerfully answered to my good morning and asked me if I had a good walk. Without paying much attention I answered that my walk had been fine but very long, I was exhausted but happy.

He told me that he felt happy that roses were beginning to bloom and that the smell of wet soil and freshly cut grass made his day. Continue reading

Back from the past

That street looked not as wide as usual, not as long as the picture in my mind. I grew up in that street but now it looked smaller somehow. Did the houses in that street shrink maybe under the pressure of time and space?

I haven´t been there maybe in 30 years or so. The trees were of course taller than when I lived there but some way they didn’t look that taller than in my memories.

But the houses were now shorter, the whole street not as wide and the people were all different. Continue reading

Balance

I was trying to keep my balance by walking on a small line drawn on the pavement on my way back home.  I was visualising the way we sometimes try to keep the “balance” in our lives.

Have you seen how the most we try to “force” a new habit, the harder it is?

Food, exercise, positive thinking, new ideas, diets, etc.

The harder I tried to walk on the line without losing my balance, the harder it was to keep it. I easily lost it and I had to make an effort to get back “on the line”. Continue reading

There is no time in life to waste

I am not saying you need to get worried about time and hurry to do everything right now before something happens to you. That will stress you more than help you in anyway.

What I mean here is stop thinking that you can leave things for a better time, for another moment, for tomorrow, and so on and so forth.

I have been losing many friends lately. Yes I am guilty for having friends who are older than me. But you know what? Older people have an unbelievable baggage of experiences, accumulated knowledge and life lessons to share with anyone who is willing to listen to them and believe me, they are willing to share their stories with you. I respect your ways

I know you have heard many times that we are all different. No matter how long we have lived in the same community, in the same house and even in the same family. We have a lot in common and yet, we are still different.

You might like to add sugar in your tea, I prefer a little more cream in it instead. You might prefer a bagel with it, I prefer a ring doughnut. You might like to talk about politics, I rather skip that subject.

We can be so different in so many aspects and yet, we can share a nice tea moment, each enjoying, at the same time, our own personal pleasures. Continue reading

The voice

Wait! You have been through too many things in your life and you might not be perfect, but you are a gem who took a long time and effort to be who you are now.

You have reached this far and it would be a shame if you’d stopped right now and decide to finish your journey just a few inches from your goal.

I know your trip have been difficult, you have survived and you are a living example for all of us who are watching you, even if you haven’t noticed us. Continue reading
