Costs

In my younger years, I had always seen economics, the subject, with disdain because I considered it not a science but a topic of “personal opinions and interpretations.”  Nowadays I have reached the conclusion that most of our believes are a product of our own personal opinions and interpretations, although it seems we are not very aware of that.

I questioned a friend of mine, who is a very well-respected economist, if he could give me an example of economics theory applied on our daily life, and while I was not expecting a great answer, his example made a profound impression on me.

He looked at me with a relaxed look in his eyes and said: “One of the things that I had applied in my life very often is the law of the sunk costs.”

I looked at him perplexed waiting for a clearer explanation. Continue reading

Replay (Note to self)

I remember when my daughters loved to spend hours watching their movies on DVD over and over again.

They actually watched the same movie two or three times in a row. They had a whole collection of different titles for children and they loved them all.

Each girl had their favourite, and those I had to watch with them sometimes until I could repeat every line of every character by heart.

Fortunately, once they had watched those movies a trillion times, new ones came out and then they moved to the new stories.

Nowadays they have grown up a little, and they no longer watch one movie several times in a day. (well… not very often anyway). Continue reading

Pretend and create

To carry the weight of our own mistakes can be very difficult sometimes.

Too many things depending on us and, too many shared responsibilities adding weight to the load on our shoulders.

So when the load is unbearable and someone else criticise our behaviour or questions our methods, we tend to look for an external factor where we can  place the blame, “The real cause of the problem”.

So finding an external factor to justify our mistakes, behaviours, reactions, etc., is the easiest and painless solution and actually, we are pretty good at it.

It’s a universal activity, that we all, one way or the other, end up using to our advantage. But does that solve anything?

Do you know what will happen the day you decide to look inside of your being for the cause of everything, good or bad? Continue reading

Mistakes

I was standing in the middle of the gym with all my classmates staring at me amusingly watching my intents to defend myself against my opponent.

I was the smallest bloke in the class, in age and size, but at that time I was not very interested in their opinion about me.

I loved martial arts and despite of my efforts, the combat ended up really bad for me.

But in that particular moment, for some reason that was irrelevant to me and after that humiliating exercise, my teacher made a long list of all the appalling mistakes I made that time.  Actually I made all the known and unknown faults listed in the manual. But I was so focused on my passion for training that it didn’t sound intimidating or discouraging to me. Continue reading

Tired

I have tried to sleep more hours to see if my weariness would fade away. But I kept feeling tired, with no energy whatsoever.  When your inner self is tired, all the physical rest and sleeping will not make a difference.

There are days when you wake up and life hurts, therefore you resent it and will reflect it in your physical body.  And of course it will take you longer to stand on your feet, but any way you have to do it.

You see, it is easier for our brain to recall bad memories.  We usually remember more the bad events than the good ones, so we keep them in the first row of our conscious mind and that could be one of the main reasons why we keep repeating our mistakes and manifesting our worst fears faster. Are you proud?

After all these years of living your life in your own way, after acquiring habits, ideas, skills and knowledge and creating the person you are now. What do you think of the results? Are you proud of your life?

And I am talking on a general level, not specifics.

I know there are many things you have accomplished and that can make your feel proud of yourself. And yes, there are thousands of things you haven’t achieved yet but that shouldn´t make you feel less proud of who you are now. Continue reading

Not that far away…

When I have these dialogues with my inner self, I tend to “justify” many of the mistakes my subconscious mind points out to me. But as I cannot fool myself so easily, very often I end up “burnt and crashed” but a little bit wiser and stronger.

Sometimes I kept dreaming on things that seemed so “impossible” or too “far away” from me to reach them but that “impossibility” or “distance” made my mind doubt I could ever reach them. I am sure you have been there as well. We all have.

So when I begin to feel that way now what I usually do is rewind my memory tape and push play again so I can see how things “seemed” in the past and how now I am enjoying what in those times looked so far away from my reach and/or impossible to obtain at that time.

There is nothing more frustrating than entertaining the feeling of impossibility to reach a dream. Continue reading

Empires

A teacher I had, once told us that learning History is one of the most important subjects, not because of the dates and names, but because it teaches what mistakes were made in the past and how not to repeat them again.

Although I think we all have failed on that completely because humans are repeating same mistakes over and over again all the time. So I think that we are not done learning that important skill from history yet.

One of the most impressive parts in human history, to me at least, is the rise and fall of the biggest empires all over the world.  From the Roman Empire, the Mongol Empire, The Russian empire, The British Empire and so on. Continue reading

Modifying your past (Warning: Crazy thoughts ahead enter at your own risk)

With Quantum mechanics our common logic does not work, it doesn’t matter how much we try to make sense of it, it is amazing but it´s real.

More and more universities around the world are working on different theories and experiments to try to understand the bases of quantum world. And the conclusions, or at least the results of those experiments are totally mind blowing. That is why Niels Bohr said that if you read an hour about Quantum Physics and your head doesn’t hurt, you didn’t understand anything. Continue reading
