Sometimes we wish other people would know what we know, and they could do what we do and be as good as we are at doing some things.
We get frustrated when our children or those people close to us cannot see the world the same way we do. We think that if only they could see things from our own perspective, things would be so much easier for them.
It is so difficult sometimes trying to explain some situations when we see them from the outside. But for the people “inside” things look complex and overwhelming. And of course, we cannot understand why they cannot see things that are so “obvious” to us.
But in these cases, we are guilty as well, we rarely stop to think than the others have a very different learning path then our own. They do need to go through the difficulties and “problems” they are facing now in order to grow and become wiser. In fact, you are doing the same thing right now, that is why we are all here. I have met many people who are convinced they are what they are not. And when you hold an idea in your mind long enough, it becomes part of your reality.
The problem is, that when you are holding in your mind the wrong concept, then the outside world will cause you more harm than good.
For instance, I know a friend whose parents told him all the time he was not good at math. They repeated him all the time he was a failure in math and other sciences. Fortunately for him and for many of us, he ended up listening to his inner voice that always told him he really liked math and he ended up being a wonderful math teacher who loves spreading his knowledge to his students and has been teaching several generations the magic of math. If someone would tell you right now that you are more “in charge” of your happiness than you think, what would your answer be?
Of course, we all are now aware of our “responsibility and influence” on our own happiness and well-being. We have read a lot lately about how important our thoughts and feelings are to influence our end results.
But most times we need a reminder of this, because as soon as the things become difficult, we tend to forget our own power and immediately go back to “desperation mode”.
The XIV Dalai Lama once said: “If there is no solution to the problem then do not waste time worrying about it. If there is a solution to the problem then do not waste time worrying about it”.
And I have been many times there, where I thought things were very rough and I felt powerless and scared for the “magnitude” of the problems I had right in front of me. But after some time, with the help of others or even through my own merits, I finally realised that things were not as huge as they seemed. Continue reading →
“I just want to know the truth” I heard a by passer said with desperation. The person who was walking with him, softly answered:” But you already know the truth”. The first person acted surprised at first, but then he nodded accepting the comment and sadly looked away to the distance in silence.
Can we hide the truth so easily from ourselves? Are we really constantly avoiding to see it, even when it is “clearly “right in front of our eyes? Continue reading →
They say “The grass is greener on the other side of the fence”. This refers to the way we tend to look at other people’s lives and other things that we don’t have in general.
It comes from the idea of you looking at a neighbour’s lawn and seeing it as better looking, healthier and especially greener than your own, but actually you are just NOT looking at the negative aspects of it, but only giving a lower profile to your own.
At times you make all you can to jump to the other side of the fence and then, once you see things from there, you see the grass was not as greener as you saw it from your former perspective. Continue reading →
Looking through old papers I found old notes I used to receive from a friend who worked at NASA and who due to his high position there, he was able to give me the latest news for me to broadcast in my radio program every day.
He had me in a special email group where I received inner memos and info that were not ready many times for news release. So more than once I had to take back and apologise on the air, for some news that were proved wrong or changed afterwards.
Despite the fact that my friend does not work there any more I will not mention his name here, besides that is irrelevant because what I would like to share with you today is that one of the news I found among my program notes was the memo warning about a huge asteroid approaching our planet with a high percentage of possibilities of collision. Last time I was there I was feeling sad and tired. The field looked at that time dry and colourless. The weather was fine but I felt it cold and asphyxiating. I had lost an aunt who had been as my second mother all my life and from that moment on, life would be very different to what I thought it would be my reality for ever.
A photograph captured that moment. I never dared to see that photo again so it remain for many years hidden in a box.
The image of that field never changed. In my memories it was dry, cold and gloomy. I had never returned to visit that place in all these years. Continue reading →
We always complain about the bad things that happen to us in our everyday life.
Sometimes we feel the worst things take place at the worst moment so our mind begins to orbit around our problems, leaving the rest of our life out of perspective. Then the rest of the world disappears and our attention is focused on those “terrible situations”.
We all have been there and when we finally take a look around us, we finally see there are much bigger problems in the life of others that the ones we are considering as our doom. Continue reading →
“I am very good at solving everybody´s problems, I always find different options for others to follow, but I don´t understand what happens when I try to find my own solution, my mind gets blurry and I cannot think straight.” An old friend was telling me the other day.
“Maybe you are taking your own problems too “seriously” or to “viscerally” and that emotional charge is impeding you to see things clearly” I answered while understanding perfectly what he was talking about and feeling the guilt of having been there too many times already.
He looked at me with an astonished look on his eyes and quickly answered: “I am trying to be logical, I am looking at things as they are.”
“No, you are looking at the things as you are now. You are interpreting them through your own particular filters, that´s it.” I said closing my mouth really hard in order to keep more words from coming out from it. Continue reading →
