What you are not

 

I have met many people who are convinced they are what they are not. And when you hold an idea in your mind long enough, it becomes part of your reality.

The problem is, that when you are holding in your mind the wrong concept, then the outside world will cause you more harm than good.

For instance, I know a friend whose parents told him all the time he was not good at math.  They repeated him all the time he was a failure in math and other sciences. Fortunately for him and for many of us, he ended up listening to his inner voice that always told him he really liked math and he ended up being a wonderful math teacher who loves spreading his knowledge to his students and has been teaching several generations the magic of math. Perfection

 

I remember a friend of mine who suffered a congenital illness and his body presented some deformities that made him feel bad. Especially during his school years for his classmates were very mean to him. He suffered a lot for that and he decided he would begin a quest to find perfection.

If he had not a perfect body, he would find perfection in other areas of his being. So, he decided to practice several sports so he could get a better physique, and he became a good boxer with great muscles. He even represented his country in the Olympic Games.

But he did not feel that his quest was complete. Having a strong body and Olympic medals was not enough and he told me he did not feel even close to perfection. Continue reading

Do your part

 

I do not need to remind you of all the bad things happening every day in our planet. It is actually very difficult to turn your head to the other side to avoid the news.

There is a tendency in the media nowadays to highlight the bad news since they know that is what really sells. When they publish good news, people do not react the same way and they lose their profit.

The real problem is, that we accept that game, and get too inundated with those notes, and besides our personal everyday problems, we get even more stress with the tragedies in the world.

I know it is important to be informed of what is happening in the international and local arena. But in the process of finding a subject for the lunch time chat, we keep forgetting that we will have our part on this global stress wave. Continue reading

Building the new   

In a time of fast changes in technology, politics, society, ideologies and so on and so forth, being static seems to be “out of fashion”.

New discoveries in science appear and our ideas and old prejudices must change as well. Quantum physics is really weird and although it seems it cannot affect your “reality” directly, some of its effects are beginning to be understood nowadays.  We are changing the way we see our universe and there will be radical changes in our mentalities and dogmas in science and religion.  Yes, you have read well, there are dogmas in science too, believe it or not.  But we´ll talk about it some other time. There are many stubborn “scientists” out there who prefer to look to the other side when a new idea appears, since it is much more comfortable to remain believing in the old concepts than work on understanding and testing the new ones. Why is that happening again?

I thought I had finally left the bad habit of adding salt to my food without tasting it first.  I have slowed down my eating speed quite a lot and keeping my hands away from the salt shaker as much as possible, but I have caught myself adding salt more often, to food that does not really need it.

Yes, for some strange reason (maybe my body needs a little more sodium lately) My mind keeps bringing thoughts of salty food and, that constant desire for salt is pushing my hands to grab the salt shaker more often, maybe this is just a justification, but that is a habit I need to work on immediately before it causes a bigger damage.

Same with other bad habits, and fear as well. Fear is a bad habit when you allow it to be the master of your thoughts too frequently.

Watch your language

I just received a copy of a very interesting study made by three Universities in the United Kingdom on colour perception.

They found a tribe in Africa with a language limited to three words to describe colours.  One word for the dark colours, one for middle range colours and one for very light colours.

To make a long a story short, in one of these studies, they showed different illustrations with different shades of the same colour to members of that tribe and they immediately identified the two shades that had a slight difference. But, when they showed the same illustration to westerners, who did not have different words to define those shades of green, they could not find the difference or took a long time to notice it. They haven´t got different words to describe those colours, therefore those westerners couldn’t find the difference so easily.

But when the scientist showed an illustration with six green squares and one blue square, westerners immediately pointed at the blue square, but people from that tribe couldn’t find it. They have the same word to describe both colours. For them the concept was the same and as colours are concepts we create in our minds, they could not find the difference. Continue reading

Just here

I must admit that being focused on this present moment is not as easy as I thought.

My mind is wandering more than ever and trying to keep it in this local reality is costing me an extra effort today.

Too many things are trying to keep me from “being here” and that is so interesting to observe, because I am trying to ask myself why, something apparently so simple, is so complicated today.

Probably paying so much attention to my thoughts today is making the task more difficult or, struggling to keep my mind relaxed is what is causing the opposite effect. But nevertheless it is so fascinating to observe this process from the inside. Continue reading

Knowledge

When I look at the things I have been through so far, I realise that most of my experience, those things I consider as valuable knowledge, are mostly the result of painful events.

I am able to walk now, because many times I fell down as I tried to take my first steps when I was a little child, I got up again and kept trying to imitate those people around me who were able to walk without a problem.

Every fall was painful, but that did not kept me from standing up again and keep trying. And now, thanks to that I can walk for hours and enjoy it. Continue reading

The power of the vacuum

Few year ago in London I had the opportunity to witness a demonstration of the Casimir Effect experiment that proves the existence of energy in the “vacuum”.  Do not worry I will not get too technical here so if you would like to get more information on this, search “The Casimir effect” on the net. I am sure you will find this very interesting.

This morning I received new info on that subject and it inspired me to find more answers on different situations I am going through right now.

We are discovering nowadays that most concepts we had about that, what we call reality, are wrong. And we will need to re-think our own ideas and concepts once more. Continue reading

Does it matter any more?

Looking through old papers I found old notes I used to receive from a friend who worked at NASA and who due to his high position there, he was able to  give me the latest news for me to broadcast in my radio program every day.

He had me in a special email group where I received inner memos and info that were not ready many times for news release. So more than once I had to take back and apologise on the air, for some news that were proved wrong or changed afterwards.

Despite the fact that my friend does not work there any more I will not mention his name here, besides that is irrelevant because what I would like to share with you today is that one of the news I found among my program notes was the memo warning about a huge asteroid approaching our planet with a high percentage of possibilities of collision.  Continue reading
