Perfection

I remember a friend of mine who suffered a congenital illness and his body presented some deformities that made him feel bad. Especially during his school years for his classmates were very mean to him. He suffered a lot for that and he decided he would begin a quest to find perfection.

If he had not a perfect body, he would find perfection in other areas of his being. So, he decided to practice several sports so he could get a better physique, and he became a good boxer with great muscles. He even represented his country in the Olympic Games.

But he did not feel that his quest was complete. Having a strong body and Olympic medals was not enough and he told me he did not feel even close to perfection. Continue reading

Repeating

Why was I so afraid to ride a bicycle that day? I had enjoyed riding my bike as a child and despite the fact that many years had passed, the memory of those joyful days riding through the parks were still fresh in my mind.

So how come I suddenly felt so scared to ride a bicycle?

After all, my uncle Richard just wanted me to see the beautiful sights of east England! What could be wrong with that?

Just the view of that bicycle made me shiver. I felt a huge fear in my solar plexus and that kept me from accepting my uncle’s invitation.

It took me a while to detect where that fear came from.

I thought all my memories related to bicycles were good, but after a detailed scrutiny of my deepest memories, I was able to reminisce the last time I rode a bike as a child. Yes, a long long time ago.

I could remember I lost control of the bike and I felt down hurting myself badly, due to the accident my bicycle got damaged and I couldn’t ride it anymore.  After that I move to a new house and changed bicycles for roller skates. So that was the end of my cycling career.

But some way, my brain saved that feeling of pain and fear of the accident and filed it in a section of my mind that was not consulted very often, so my conscious mind did not have it very present. Therefore, it was apparently forgotten.

Relearning

I always thought I had mastered my favourite subject (mathematics) since I had graduated and received a title as an engineer. When I was at school, I always entertained the idea that once you finish your career you know everything you need to work on your profession and then you can proceed to the next step. Whatever a next step is.

I thought I had “made it” and I shouldn’t worry about “looking back” to review what I supposedly knew so well. But I was surprised when I tried to enrol in an advanced quantum mechanics class, they asked me to take an online test to see my “level”, since this class was only for “advanced students”. And they expected us to have a certain level in order to deal with the concepts without having to “explain the basics” to the no initiated.  Continue reading

 Words

I was trying to understand what two young girls were trying to say to each other while waiting on a platform in an underground station. They were with an adult who I assume was the mother of one of the teenagers.

It was very difficult to understand what they were talking about, but I felt relieved when I notice I was not the only one, the mother and two other ladies were in the same predicament I was.  We obviously were confused with the way some words were used.

I cannot remember exactly what words they were using but, when one of them asked the other the meaning of one of those words, she gave an answer that was far from being correct. Continue reading

You´ll be missing this.

When I was a little child I dreamt with being a grown up and doing whatever I wanted without having to ask permission or receiving help from anyone. Being a grown up should be something marvellous!

I remember those times now and wish I could go back to being spoiled and ignoring many things that happen every day around me.

Years later while I was waiting for my daughter to stop crying and allow us to go back to sleep, while swinging her cradle, I remember wishing she could grow up fast and see her as a beautiful girl who would go to sleep quietly and fast! Continue reading

The Teacher

In almost every ancient tradition the role of the teacher is always mentioned with respect and reverence. At least when I was a little child we used to respect and give a very special place to our teachers, I cannot say the same is happening now, since the lack of respect for our teachers and elders will take us to bigger problems we cannot yet see clearly but we should do something about it before is too late.

But once you leave the school and begin your journey in this life, new kinds of teachers appear in different times and places just to remind you the things you already knew but keep forgetting to apply in your daily practice, or to teach you about new perspectives and methods that could help you to be a better you. For you and the rest of the planet. Continue reading
