Consideration

“I must be getting old”, I thought.

When I was younger I remember to feel bad about those grumpy old men who spend their whole time complaining about everything and everyone.

My grandmother used to say: “When I was your age, people were polite, we never disrespect others”. “Your generation knows not what manners are” and so on and so forth.

And now, I have become that old grumpy man who cannot believe his eyes and ears anymore.  Continue reading

What they say

He was in shock! He couldn´t believe his ears. This old and well-dressed woman had just used the worst vocabulary he had heard in years. Even an old truck driver would feel ashamed with the words this woman had uttered against him and (I am not implying that all truck drivers have a bad vocabulary, I know some who read a lot and are well educated). But my friend was furious.

Just two letters, one word. Simple, small and so frightening for so many.

Avoiding the use this little word has brought more problems, misunderstandings, sadness and regrets than you can imagine.

Maybe we feel guilty when we say it? Maybe we feel we are being rude to the other person? Maybe we feel obliged to avoid it? Who knows but despite its size and simplicity, it is one of the hardest words to say for many people around the world.

Maybe we were educated to see that little word as “harsh”? Are we afraid to offend the other party? Disappoint them? Continue reading
