Do you remember that time when you thought everything was lost and there was not possible solution for that problem?
When you were a child, there were times when things appear impossible to accomplish, things like holding your spoon properly, reaching for a toy in a tall drawer, solving an addition on the blackboard while all classmates were watching you, and so forth.
Probably there were times when you felt hesitant to tell your parents you had broken their favourite vase by accident while playing with your ball inside your home. You just could not think of a way out of that situation, right?
As you advanced in your life, the tests became more challenging and the situations seemed harder. But, when you looked back, you could see that you were always able to find a solution for every tribulation you found in your way, right? Continue reading →
If someone would tell you right now that you are more “in charge” of your happiness than you think, what would your answer be?
Of course, we all are now aware of our “responsibility and influence” on our own happiness and well-being. We have read a lot lately about how important our thoughts and feelings are to influence our end results.
But most times we need a reminder of this, because as soon as the things become difficult, we tend to forget our own power and immediately go back to “desperation mode”.
The XIV Dalai Lama once said: “If there is no solution to the problem then do not waste time worrying about it. If there is a solution to the problem then do not waste time worrying about it”.
And I have been many times there, where I thought things were very rough and I felt powerless and scared for the “magnitude” of the problems I had right in front of me. But after some time, with the help of others or even through my own merits, I finally realised that things were not as huge as they seemed. Continue reading →
It does not matter if your life has been the same for years and years.
It does not matter if they tell you that your life is secured. There is no such thing. Nothing in this universe is static, secured or fixed. Even rocks have millions of atoms inside them moving all the time.
You could be worried right now about a problem that seems unsurmountable, no open doors on sight and no plausible solutions at hand.
Escaping is considered a part of our self-defence natural system. It is usually called the fight-or-flight response.
According to this theory the sympathetic nervous system reacts to danger with a hormonal secretion of different hormones, amines and neurotransmitters (Norepinephrine, epinephrine, estrogen, testosterone, cortisol and others). Thus priming the subject for fighting or fleeing.
In these modern times, usually we don´t need the fighting part of the equation, (with the exception of big cities and problematic zones of course). So the fleeing part is much more active in some people. Continue reading →
He usually looked so calmed and relaxed, I wondered sometimes if he ever got angry or nervous about something.
One day I heard he was going through a severe legal problem involving a money issue with his relatives. When I went to visit him he looked as usual, calmed and relaxed, despite the problems he was facing going to courts and having to deal with attorneys all the time.
At first I didn’t dare to ask him how he was feeling, since his attitude was clear enough as to see he was doing quite well. Continue reading →
Few years ago I was imparting a self-defence class in a community centre for women (most of them were rape victims). I was talking about the importance of quickly neutralising the opponent to allow them to escape as soon as possible and/or ask for help depending on the circumstances.
In order to show a technique to keep a stranger at a certain distance and defend themselves from an attack, I asked a tinny woman to help me demonstrate the technique to the other students.
At first, she hesitated and timidly approached. She didn’t dare to look at me and kept her eyes all the time on the floor. Continue reading →
I was in my teen years, so the way I felt and saw things was pretty intense. I was going through a difficult existential crisis and couldn’t control my depression.
I was feeling my world had ended and there was not a feasible solution ahead. Suddenly something happened and I had a strange experience, I was watching myself feeling and thinking negative absurd things. It wasn’t like an out-of-body experience, it was all inside my head, it was as if my brain was divided in two and one side was judging the other. Continue reading →
A cycle is just a series of events that are regularly repeated in the same order. Just as the day precedes night and spring precedes summer and then comes autumn, then winter and the cycles begins once more. Actually there is no beginning nor ending.
The same happens with every kind of cycle. A school year, a relationship cycle, a work cycle and so on. Continue reading →
He was complaining about the way the river had caused the flood and damaged the harvests, how that “damn river” had made disappear his work of many years and “now with this damn legs I cannot move the way I need to go and buy my groceries”. And he kept cursing about many other things like the government, the global warming among other things.
While I drank my tea, I could listen his companions complaining as well about many different situations and aspects that were affecting them and all of us too. Continue reading →
