What you are not

I have met many people who are convinced they are what they are not. And when you hold an idea in your mind long enough, it becomes part of your reality.

The problem is, that when you are holding in your mind the wrong concept, then the outside world will cause you more harm than good.

For instance, I know a friend whose parents told him all the time he was not good at math.  They repeated him all the time he was a failure in math and other sciences. Fortunately for him and for many of us, he ended up listening to his inner voice that always told him he really liked math and he ended up being a wonderful math teacher who loves spreading his knowledge to his students and has been teaching several generations the magic of math. Mirroring

Do you take yourself very seriously?

Don’t, actually, nobody else does.

We usually think other people “see us” as we see ourselves.

The truth is, every person who knows you has a different impression of you and their perspective could be totally opposite to yours, therefore, their “image” of you could be completely different to your own.

I believe we all know someone who seems to live in a very “isolated bubble”, especially, regarding to the energy they “send out” to the world.

I know a person who believes he is very handsome, humble, loved and liked by all his community.  If you ask him, everybody adore him, respect him and admire him.  According to him, everybody is his friend, especially famous and powerful people and he loves to brag about his photographs with them, with his family and friends. Watch your language

I just received a copy of a very interesting study made by three Universities in the United Kingdom on colour perception.

They found a tribe in Africa with a language limited to three words to describe colours.  One word for the dark colours, one for middle range colours and one for very light colours.

To make a long a story short, in one of these studies, they showed different illustrations with different shades of the same colour to members of that tribe and they immediately identified the two shades that had a slight difference. But, when they showed the same illustration to westerners, who did not have different words to define those shades of green, they could not find the difference or took a long time to notice it. They haven´t got different words to describe those colours, therefore those westerners couldn’t find the difference so easily.

But when the scientist showed an illustration with six green squares and one blue square, westerners immediately pointed at the blue square, but people from that tribe couldn’t find it. They have the same word to describe both colours. For them the concept was the same and as colours are concepts we create in our minds, they could not find the difference. Continue reading

The test

When you study a particular subject you are aware that after a certain period of time your teacher will try to evaluate your learning level by applying an exam.

Most educational systems have this habit of doing exams weekly, monthly some even more often and then at the end of the school period.

Nobody object this.  We all accept it, if not willingly at least we don´t make a big fuss about it. Continue reading

Begining

“If I had known all the things I had to go through to get to where I am now, I think I would have never began. Ignorance is not a bad thing after all.” That was the answer from a prominent physicist when I asked him in an interview, about the beginning of his career. He had reached the highest level in different disciplines of his field and even won the Nobel Prize in the 70s.

He taught me that day a great lesson, not in physics , but a life lesson.  We should never forget that even Albert Einstein was a complete neophyte in math and physics at one time.  He was curious, he found the answers that convinced him and found his passion in physics and began the study everything he could, devouring all the books on that subject he could get. He began that journey at some point in his life and reached very high levels.

We all have begun a similar journey many times in our lives. I am sure you are very good at something, or know more than others in a particular theme. Through years of studying, practising, reading, etc, you have reached a good level at something that you love to do. And now you are good at something as no one else is, because you have added to that your own experiences and personal baggage.  But if you were to start from zero right now, you probably would think it twice before starting that journey.

But don’t let that stop you from taking the first step into your next adventure.
